“You cannot avoid homophobia, racism, or sexism. You may put yourself into a bubble and have people who have the same views as you, but that isn’t revolutionary. Theory is nothing without good practice. You cant go to working class neighborhoods and start rambling off with privilege politics and judge them for not knowing as much as you. So what you have is circle jerk of academics never bringing that theory in an effective way to working class people. What is created instead, is exclusion of the very people you seem to care about, but never talk to or understand their stories.
Say no to escapism, and instead dedicate every part of you to fighting against oppression. Fighting Racism is not a game. Its not sending a tweet and feeling good about yourself. Even Melissa Harris Perry says hash tag actvism is not effective activism. The revolution will not be televised. Even in Egypt young people who used twitter to organize had their websites shut down ( by us owned military companies). A tweet will not protect you from a bullet. A tweet will not send down the white house.”—Regina Joseph (via basednkrumah)
I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes.
Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You’re doing things you’ve never done before, and more importantly, you’re Doing Something.
So that’s my wish for you, and all of us, and my wish for myself. Make New Mistakes. Make glorious, amazing mistakes. Make mistakes nobody’s ever made before. Don’t freeze, don’t stop, don’t worry that it isn’t good enough, or it isn’t perfect, whatever it is: art, or love, or work or family or life.
Can I just give big hugs to Sam, Tammy, Liz, Camren, Anna, Erika, Annie, Kyle, Nikhil, Rohit, Katya, and Leigh? You know, it’s lonely not really knowin’ anyone here, but how lonely can I really be with all these people to love?
